The author has been involved in developing Automatic Routing Software for the process industry and in 1995 presented a paper at the US Intergraph Graphics User Group, the text of which is available here.The software solves the optimum routing problem by using heuristics and this algorithm operates at speeds which allow the user to try alternatives interactively. This is something that many other commercial systems fail to do.
